Halloween is right around the corner. One popular Halloween craft is to carve pumpkins. This year we did something different. My daughter is 18, my step daughter is 8. My husband didn’t feel comfortable with my SD using the knife on her own. She is also at the age where she wants to do everything on her own. I came up with an alternative, crafty pumpkins!! I use to do this with my daughter when she was younger. She still loves it.
I gave the girls a container of acrylic paint, paint brushes, glue and a container of ribbon. Then I just let their creative flow. They had the best time. They were giggling and talking about their creations the whole time. Although they are 10 yrs apart in age, they get along great and really love each other.
They sat together like that working on their pumpkins for about an hour. This is amazing since they are both full of a lot of energy. We can never get them to sit still.
This is the end result. Of course my SD had to copy her big sister and make a cat face as well. Towards the end my SD ended up just mixing a bunch of colors of paint together and making a grey color. She loved and had fun. We just let her go and let her enjoy herself. The biggest thing about this craft is to just let them do their own thing. Don’t try to correct them and have them do it the way you would want.
We have the pumpkins proudly displayed on the planters on either side of our porch. The girls love to see their pumpkins displayed. We will do this again next year. Actually, the girls loved this so much I’m now looking up some fun Thanksgiving crafts.
