Freeplay makes staying safe easily when outdoors.

Freeplay logo

Freeplay makes different radios that help with weather awareness. Gina’s Library of Reviews is happy to bring you this review of their Encore Buddy Radio.

Freeplay Encore Buddy

Product Description:

On alert

When the Weather Alert function is on, the radio will automatically broadcast NOAA emergency weather alerts for your area such as severe storms, hurricanes and tornadoes

In tune

With the Encore Buddy sound is clear and crisp and the digital tuner ensures you can always pick up the channels you need whether you are listening to AM/FM or NOAA Weather band.

The back-lit display makes it easy to find and see your stations even when the power is off and for quiet listening you can plug in your headphones.

Quad power

The Encore Buddy powers up in 4 different ways – via the solar panel, hand crank, USB connector, or from your wall socket via an optional AC adaptor.*

Put the Encore Buddy in the sun and the built-in solar panel will top-up the battery. Crank the hand handle for one minute and you’ll produce enough power for approximately 20 minutes of radio at normal volume, 60 minutes of light or 3-5 minutes of talk time.

From a full charge the radio will play for 6 hours at normal volume.

In touch

To charge your mobile phone, simply plug it into the 5V 1A USB port. Power will automatically “dump charge” to your phone, just like plugging into the wall. Fully charged the Encore Buddy will provide a 25% charge to most phones*.

Bright stuff

The LED flashlight with 3 super bright LEDs will light your way in darkness or when the power is down.

Built tuf

Like all Freeplay products the Encore Buddy does not compromise on robustness and quality with mechanical components made from superior materials, specified to industrial standards for repeated use and long life.

My Review:

If you spend any time outdoors it’s very important to pay attention to the weather. A sudden summer storm can strike at any time and you don’t want to be caught unprepared. The Encore Buddy is the perfect must have radio. It’s small and compact so it’s easy to carry in your backpack if you are hiking. It’s also small enough to fit in a drawer if you are camping RV style.

I camp in the summertime in an RV that doesn’t move. It’s very important to know what the weather is because there are so many trees around me. I will feel a lot safer since I’m at camp alone a lot.

This radio is an am/fm radio along with a weather alert radio. I charged it up with my laptop in about 2 hours. That’s fast!
