I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to some very dear friends of mine. The family consists of Mom Natalie, Step dad Dale (he’s also the father of the youngest). There are 4 children in the family. 3 handsome young men and a beautiful young lady. The star of this particular story though is Joey.
Let me tell you about Joey. This is what his mom wrote on their gofundme.com page.
My son, Joey, is 6 years old and has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 – which means he has severe muscle deterioration and basically cannot do anything for himself. He has had a power chair for 3 years now, and it is the only thing that helps him have his own independence. To make it by so far we’ve used a hitch to transport the chair. Joey lays flat on our middle van seats while his siblings sit in the rear row. The van we are raising funds for is a dream come true! It will give Joey the ability to drive his chair onto a lift and into van. Not only that; he will also love to actually watch the world go by having a view out the window versus the view he has now of the van cieling and a peak at the tops of trees. As far as siblings go, the new accesible van is basically a small bus and will accommodate the whole family comfortably on trips. We will have more than enough room for Joey’s numerous medical machines and supplies along with being able to comfotably ride with his brothers and sister. I can’t tell you how hard of a squeeze it’s been so far with our current accomidations! We go camping almost every weekend until the fall where Joey loves to fish, have campfires and of course ride his power chair if we have the room & means to bring it with us. Joey also loves to go to the zoo, the park and other local destinations. If we have the new handicap van we will be able to take Joey on shopping trips in his power chair, doctor appointments, more zoo trips our campground with his power chair and anywhere else with total ease …. It will be a whole new world for him. So please donate whatever you can to help our family. At his age it’s only going to become more & more difficult to carry him and this really is the only option for his future….Thanks so much for your grace, compassion, and support!
They were able to raise the money for the van itself. However, with all used vehicles there are things that need done to make it road ready. They are trying very hard to get this van and have it on the road to make it to the SMA conference in June.
This is life changing for Joey and his family. Please, if you are able to donate even $10 will you do so to help this little boy? What a great way to give back to your community. You can donate online at their gofundme site.
