His heart beat in his throat as he descended the stairs. Aaron kept his eyes on each step, watching for black ice. He planned on going to the emergency room to work, not because he’d reinjured his bad knee by being careless.
When he glanced over, he saw it. Evan’s car sitting next to Mandy’s. The bastard had spent the night with her. This knowing for sure hurt worse than he’d expected it to. Exhaustion last night had kept him from brooding too much before falling asleep and then rushing around this morning to get ready held worry at bay as well. He looked away, his eyes and throat stinging from more than the frigid air.
“I don’t care,” he muttered under his breath, refusing to look at the vehicles sitting side by side. On the way to work, he invented plans and discarded them the first second after creating them. Confronting the two and ordering Mandy to only date Aaron was out. Moving back to Vancouver held the most appeal until he realized he’d never see her again. Not unless he visited Halifax on vacation.
Aaron ran into the parking divider a little hard. With a start, he realized he’d not paid attention to any of the drive over. He sighed and got out. All this could be worse. He could have run into the lovebirds kissing each other goodbye this morning. He needed to shake this off. His patients would need him sharp, not mooning over a lost love.
