I would like to thank Rocco Basile for finding the time for this interview. As a blogger, photography is a very important part of my job. It has always been something I’ve been interested in.
How did you get your start into photography as a business?
I believe photography is one of the most popular professions and hobbies for creative minds. I specialize in fine art photography, although I also do portrait, wildlife, and landscape photography. I started my studio by crafting a solid business plan, and then figured my finances. To attract clients, I worked hard to create my own brand and promoted my business, starting with the immediate circle of friends followed by social media. I embarked on an aggressive marketing strategy soon after when things began to look up. Since establishing Rocco Basile photography, the Southern California studio has mentored many aspiring photographers and become a premier avenue for up-and-coming photographers to showcase their work to the world.
Do you have any tips for beginner photographers?
The path to becoming a successful professional photographer is a learning curve. To the uninitiated, photography can be an exciting hobby, which anyone with photography chops can pick up. The first step is choosing your area of specialization in order to distinguish yourself from the competition. Some of the basic equipment, you will need at the beginning include; the right camera and lens, computer, photo editing software and a portfolio for presenting your work. You don’t have to purchase the most expensive camera and accompanying equipment because the need to upgrade will come automatically. I would also like to add the following tips:
- Keep the camera with you at all times because you never know when a great photo opportunity will spring up.
- Make a list of shoots you would like to take
- If you have shaky hands, consider investing in an affordable tripod
- Take photos regularly and try to experiment with the camera settings. The manual can help you explore these reaches.
- Use social networking and online marketing strategies such as search engine optimization to promote your services.
How important is it to have a DSLR camera as opposed to a simple point and shoot?
Most advanced cameras today come with complicated features such as smile detection, face-detection, and GPS capabilities. The DSLR camera has a bigger sensor, which produces better image quality, better light sensitivity and high focus and shutter speed, which enables the user to take multiple shots a second. In some DSLR models, you can capture up to 10 frames a second. The other benefits of DSLR camera include flexible controls and the ability to use different lenses.
Point to shoot a camera on its part comes with massive depth and are generally easy to carry because of their compact shape. These cameras are also more affordable. Compared to a DSLR camera, the downside of using point to shoot cameras include low image quality due to the small size camera sensor, fixed lens and inability to isolate the subject from the background. The design of the lens makes it difficult to upgrade the internal flash. Most compact and shoot cameras also give the use limited control over the shutter and aperture speed.
