Who is your favorite character in White Night, and why?

Oh, it’s Soul. No question about it. Don’t misunderstand. I love Jo and Max. And Jo and Soul really are one. But I had so much fun writing Soul. She is Jo’s conscience, her mentor, her taskmaster, and her heart. She’s tasked with something I don’t think I’d want to do: guide someone through their life to find love and redemption. Especially with someone as stubborn as Jo. And no question about it, Soul is very Whoopi Goldberg (unintentionally, but in reading now ….).

But the beautiful thing about Soul is that she has absolutely no ego. Her only concern is Jo, and Jo’s wellbeing. Does she give Jo a hard time? Oh yes. Does she smack her when she’s being deliberately obtuse? Oh yes. But does she love her? Beyond eternity, yes. And that’s what makes White Night, to me, such a love story. Yes, there is Max and Jo’s story, but more than that, there is Soul and Jo’s story. And I believe that we all have the power within us to have that same kind of love story. I love this line from “The Greatest Love of All” and it may be the thread of the book: “And if by chance that special place that you’ve been dreaming of leads you to a lonely place, find your strength in love.”
